I recently purchased a K100d with the Pentax DA 50-200mm kit lens. My birthday is coming upand I want to add a 18--55mm lens. I have been looking at the Pentax SMCDA 18-55mm, the kit lens which sells for around $80 and the Sigma 18-50 mm DC lens which sells for about $20 more. I am new to DSLR and don't know too much about lens and would appreciate any opinions on these two.

Thank you

I have both of these lenses, as I gave the Pentax 18-55mm to my g/f and I bought the Sigma 18-50mm for myself. I recently swapped back, as she rarely uses the 18-55 (she always uses the 50-200mm) just to compare the two.

I found that while both are basically the same optically, IMHO, the Pentax has the dubious advantage of a focus clutch, allowing ou to manual focus after autofocussing. As I have never used this, I found it comes down to personal preference, money and availability.

The Sigma does seem to feel cheaper than the Pentax - more of a plasticy feel to it. Both take good shots though.

Personally, as you already have the 50-200, then I would go with the 18-55 to complete possibly the best kit lens duo of any manufacturer.

Yes, like Dal said, the Pentax kit lens offers a very nice wide-angle option, with very decent performance, especially if you consider it's a kit lens.

I think I would not be the only one here to say that it would be a shame to pass up on it, especially considering the price.

I have been very happy with the 18-55mm kit lens. It viginettes a bit at 18mm but I get nice shots throughout the range. When I finally upgrade to the K10 (or whatever Pentax brings out next) I will probably get the camera with a second kit lens, just to have one available for each body (my wife would be using the k100).

All these shots are with the K100 and 18-55mm:

As is this one:
