Rare bird - SMC1000mm f/8

Found this on KEH for a reasonable price, so I figured I had to have it. Of course, now I need a larger set of tripod legs!

Here's a shot at 18mm. The target is the street light just visible over the neighbor's roof.

Here's a shot at 1000mm taken from the same location.

Wow...that's a lens. I would like to 'borrow'' that beast, just once to put my Nikon and Canon carrying buddies in their place.:D

some people might think your compensating for something if you bring that out =) lol

seriously thought - nice find - i didn't even know such a beast existed

what do you intend to use it for?

Do you need a firearms licence to use that LOL? How well does it perform for sharpness?

Less than some of the DA* lenses that are out right now.

Something that's a loooooong way away, I guess. :P You're assuming I have a master plan. I think I'll use it to shoot surfing, and for birds/wildlife. Oh, and I'm sure I'll shoot the moon a few dozen times or so. After that, who knows? Maybe for portraits of people who don't bathe? :)

Well, it's been raining pretty good ever since I got this thing, so I haven't checked it yet. Plus, it comes down to how well I can manually focus. I'm not the best at it, but I get lucky every now and then. Fringing will be a problem if I don't get the exposure just right, but the shots from my other old lenses usually clean up pretty well. For this kind of "fire power", I couldn't pass it up.

Speaking of fire power, it actually has a flip up "gun" sight on the barrel. It does come in handy for aiming the thing since the FOV is so narrow.

Sweet. I've seen these go for around 2,000 a few times now.

now that is impressive, look forward to seeing some more shots.

Don't suppose you could hand-hold this one, could you? I think I read someone say it weighs 18 lbs or something like that. They appear every so often and I think about it. Briefly and not very hard.

Nice to see that you already have a gimbal mount for it - don't think you could shoot with a ball head.

Yeah, the gimbal was my next purchase after the lens. And it looks like my tripod is just a little undersized, so I guess that will be my next purchase. :) Officially, the lens weighs 11.6 lbs. The shipping weight in the case from KEH was 28 lbs! Very little of that was taken up by the cardboard packaging they mailed it in.
