I was looking at some Pentax lenses and couldn't find a lens that reaches up to 300mm for cheap ($200-$300). Both Canon and Nikon have a 70-300mm in that range, am I just missing something because that low price telephoto is important for me. (Seeing as even just the Pentax K100D is stretching my budget)

I have the Tamron 70-300mm and I am very happy with it. It only cost me $149 plus shipping. Here's a link:

BTW, I use it on a K100D also.

Both Sigma and Tamron make zooms that go to 300 in that price range. Pentax makes the 100-300 lens, and B&H has it for around $100. I've never used any of them, but there are people here who have both the Sigma and the Tamron and have posted excellent shots with them.

Morag, Nice to see you over in this neck of the woods... I use the Sigma 100-300 4.5-6.7 and I love it, It give the reach I need (equiv to 450mm, what your used to with the P850) and VERY sharp, even at 300mm, check out the zoo pics I posted for examples taken with this lens. Oh yeah... and I managed to pick it up from Ritz, brand new, on clearance for under 65 dollars.

Here are a few that I just took about 20 minutes ago with the Tamron 70-300mm on my K100D. They are hand-held at 300mm (I love SR) and they were taken through a slightly dirty glass patio door. All three are jpegs straight from the camera with no editing except for resizing. It's kind of a cloudy day and the subject is a boring grey, but it still gives an idea of what these cheap lenses can do.
