I would like an inexpensive portrait lens which is sharper than the kit lens. This one seems to have the right specs for me, but I need some opinions on the optical quality. Has anyone used this lens? Thoughts?

For portraits you might want something faster...

Have you considered an older, manual focus lens? If you ask me thats the strongest advantage of Pentax.

One of the 50mm 1.7 or 1.4 's should get you an outstanding standard lens. If you're specifically interested in portraits I would try to find soemthing f2.8 or faster, that way you can blur the background.

This is a very nice lens, but don't know if it is what you are looking for. Usually you want a fast prime for portraits, but this is a good walk-around lens. Oh yeah, and it has a decent macro function at the long end (105mm).

I have an old (20 yrs. or so) 35-105 mm Macro Zoom Pentax that I've used on my K1000 35 mm for years. It is my favourite lens and cost about $ 375 Cdn., back in '85. Very well built, all metal and glass from what I can tell. I don't kow how the lens you're talking about would compare.

Sharp, very sharp pictures.

I don't know how it would do on a digital.

If I do get a digital Pentax I intend to use it, although the wide angle would become more like a 50mm, I guess.
