Okay now I have LBA fever and want to buy NOW I have hit a small conundrum.

I have checked the Pentax website and the SPLOSdb website and bdimitorv's website
http://www.pentaximaging.com/
http://www.jcolwell.ca/_SPLOSdb/
http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/

They ALLmention a lens specifically the Pentax 80-200 f/2.8 power zoom lens

one website says
SMC P-FA 80-200mm F2.8 ED(IF)

http://www.pentaximaging.com/

the other says
SMC PENTAX-FA* F2.8 80-200mm IF & ED
http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/

The image of both lenses appears the same. Is it the same lens?? I can find no record on the SPLOSdb or the Pentax website that says there are two versions the lens..... FA and the FA*

Somebody with some knowledge of this would really help right now as I have the opportunity NOW to buy a NEW one and want to know if the FA is the same lens as the FA*, are they the same lens being described differently.

Crash

Hi Crash,

I'm 99.99% surethere's only one FA80-200 f2.8 ED IF and it's a silver colored * lens and has Powerzoom. I'd snap it up if the price is reasonable (which for this lens would be anything under @ $2K USD). It's by quite a margin the best lens in this range and speed for the Pentax DSLRs. IIRC the last 2 on ebay went for @ $1700 USD and @ $2100 USD. I don't know if it's "worth" twice as much as the Sigma in the same range, but if I saw one available, I'd buy it.

I've not seen or heard anything but superlatives about this lens, and I doubt that Pentaxhas any plans for a DA in this particular zoom range -- the upcoming DA 60-250 is probably the closest they'll come and I'm almost positive thatit won'tbe a constant f2.8 (probably an f4 judging from the size of the lens mock up (?) that I've seen).

Scott

I emailed bdimitrov from http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/and he emailed back within the hour with this.

there is definitely only one 80-200/2.8 lens from Pentax, and it is an FA* lens.

Cheers,
Bojidar

I have found a place where I can get a brand new one for $2000USD

WooHoo

Hi Crash,

A once in a lifetime find! Looking forward to seeing what you can do with this lens (with some admitted jealousy:-))

This may have well been a lebaling error... as far as I have seen the only * designations is for the DA's and means like the K10D they are pretty weather and dust proof.

I really don' think there any FA *'s

Hi Hayward,

FYI, the * (actually a green five-pointed star) designation started with, IIRC, the M*300 f4 prime and has continued through the A, F, and FA series lenses to indicate Pentax's "Pro" line of top quality fast glass -- kinda like the "L" series lenses for Canon. Until the DA* lenses, they are not weather sealed.

My A*200 f2.8 and FA* 300 f4.5 (unfortunately the only two * lenses that I currently own) would be very upset to hear that they were said to be "mislabeled":?.

Funny even PENTAX's site makes NO MENTION of that EXCEPT for the DA* line.

I have sen various letter designations for that.... SP, ED, etc... but they have muct have long ago abandoned the * designation for that.

OK they say....

"*: the star sign follows the lens series designation (e.g., A*, FA*), and denotes a high-performance compact lens that uses special-glass elements."

Again another quality Pentax makes for the DA* line besides the sealing, but no other current line.

And I assume this thread is about a new not used lenses.... or maybe rather old (pre DA) NOS? (or again just not updated description and no longer a difference on those lines)
