After picking up that Vivitar 2x TC with the flashgun on Friday, I thought I would dig out the abandoned 70-210 Sigma lens and see how it fared on the K10D.

210mm with the 2x TC and the 1.5x crop = 630mm but is it still useable?

Actually yes, from the two test shots comparing it to the Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro lens, it's not brilliant, but not as bad as I would have feared.

Exhibit A:

100% crop, no post processing

Exhibit B, a cardboard standee thing across the other side of the room. Not a great shot, but shows the detail in the printing. Not 100% crop this time, resized.

The newer lens is obviously sharper and has more contrast, but for the extra reach it gives, it's going back in the camera bag, although not going to get a lot of use without a tripod.

So there we go, considering how much bad publicity they have, I am pleasantly surprised.

maybe it is....
i'd suggest a tripod and a lot of practice. flash also helps to freeze the moment. it's light output duration is a lot faster than the camera can flash sync at.

Alright, those example shots were rubbish as art, but they were merely to illustrate the fact that despite all the negative reactions they get, the images were comparable with the same (albeit lazy) settings on a semi-decent lens. Considering the distances between myself and the subjects without a tripod to assist, the images were always going to be poor.
