Humming birds outside the kitchen window! The most exotic bird we get in our gardens these days in the UK is probably an overweight Pigeon, if we're lucky. Heh. I think perhaps recollecting seriously for a moment, the grandest bird I ever saw in my garden was a Lesser spotted woodpecker or Quail. Maybe a Sparrowhawk once or twice? Just wish I'd been bitten by the photography bug by then!

Ps. Very nice photos. I'm bidding on a Sigma 170-500mm APO at the moment on you know where. Any reports on that lens? It'll be my first really long glass, and I'm hoping to get some nice bird shots out of it on sunny summer days.

nigerseed in autumn/ winter is fantastic to attract goldfinches, whilst black sunflower seeds are very good for all kind of "tits" and other finches. well worth trying

Black oil sunflour seeds attract just about everything here in the States! The 170-500 should be on a par with the 50-500 I have. It just doesn't have the same range. You need the bright sunny days for it to work it's best though! Same with all long lens with a bit higher f/stop number!

Hi

I tried this lens in the store on a Canon EOS 5D mkii.

Said their was a problem communicating with the lens.

Is this a faulty lens?
Or just not compatible with my camera?

Cheers

Probably should ask this in the Canon forum but assuming you tried a Sigma 400/5.6 with a Canon mount it may not be compatible. Canon does not have backwards compatibility with all of it's legacy lenses the way Pentax does.
