Given that this is basically a re-packaged Tamron, does anyone know if the focus ring can be operated manually in auto focus mode without having to set the auto/man switch to manual.

Probably not as the motor is in the camera. There are some lenses with a clutch that allow you to over-ride the auto focus but I don't believe that is one!

Both Pentax lens that I have allow manual focus over-ride which is quite useful on the odd ocaission when the auto focus fails.

The dealer that I spoke to (none local to actually view the lens) also thought the same as yourself.
