I have been fooling around with the DA 10-17 lens I have. It is great for close ups. So I thought that I would use it on my wife's critters (we, er - guinea pigs).

It turns out to be a pretty good close up lens.

It does a nice job with close-ups, and it would have a bigger DOF than a medium tele macro lens like the 100mm range ones. I love your guinea pig, too.

H is right .. a macro at f4 with the same AOV as this shot would never have that much DOF.

Hi Harriett and Roy,

Yes, the lens does offer advantages that I never considered, also aspects that you would not normally associate with a "fisheye".

I have been using my wife's guinea pigs as guinea pigs - since they tend to complain very little and sit pretty still - as opposed to our IGs (Italian Greyhounds). This Mom is sitting on two little ones, that have a very deep rich color.

The AOV even at very close range is as wide as ever, while the DOF is relatively deep, however not as deep as the Zenitar's 2.8/16, where everything appears to be in full focus from what I have seen and read - especially from Daniel. I see that some of the macro telephoto lens have such a relative narrow FoV as opposed to something that is wide, and at times helps with the shot (depending on the subject).

I have found that my 17mm Pentax lens works when I need unlimited DOF when the camera is inches from the subject. The only drawback is some distortion, which is easier to live with the a Guinea Pig than it is with something like a vehicle.

Nice shot!

I like that truck photo, Tom... fisheye distortion and all. If you de-fish it, how would it look?
