Still have to watch the light's direction to avoid the CA but the APO teleconverter helps there quite a bit by limiting the amount of CA that hits the sensor.

Appologies for reviving a dead post but I have to say that based on all the raving you and others have done about the TX and T4 Vivitars I bought a 300/5.6 T4 lens on Ebay that looked nearly mint. For good reason too, it's rubbish. At any aperture it's beaten by every 300 zoom or prime I own in terms of sharpness. The Tx is a later model right? Are they better? I've had good luck with old Vivitar zooms so I know they made some good lenses. It's a shame really as it's one of the nicer looking and constructed lenses I own, just not good as anything more than a display piece.

I have a TX 300 5.6 which other than the TX instead of the T4 mount adapters should be identical to your T4 300 f/5.5. Both made by Tokina for Vivitar as well as Soligor. Mine is very sharp from wide open all the way to f/8. Give me a little time to dig up some photos taken with it and you'll see it is a pretty darn good lens. It does have a bit of CA problems in high contrast areas and some lens flare when shooting into the sun but other than that it does a good job.
