I bought the new DA 55-300 for my upcoming vacation to Alaska (and air shows). Over the 4th I was at the Ford Village in Dearborn (I think) for the symphony and fireworks so I took the new lens and was playing around. The pics are unaltered other than sizing for dial-up guys.

There was a quartet sitting in period attire that made for a few good shots.

My favorite of the bunch

She saw me...

I attempted fireworks (with no planning or forethought) These 2 were almost good.

and here is the only "keeper" (shot with kit lens)

EDIT: That is a windmill in the foreground.

I got a 55-300 about 3 weeks ago. Very happy with it.

Sure looks like it's going to be a good lens, especially for the price. Love the second picture...

Thanks. The second one is my favorite as well. I don't think it is an amazing pic by any means but I really like the way they were completely oblivious of me. The girl adjusting her dress reallytops it off for me but I cannotverbalize why.

This Sat -> Dayton.

No Blue Angels or Thunderbirds but the Raptor should be there and a demo team flying Thuds. I have never seen a Thud in the air so that could be fun. If I get any good ones, I will post 'em.

So right now I have the DA 50-200 which is really quite nice. I picked up a J 75-300 for the extra reach, however I would really like to have a single lens rather than 2, while having the reach out to 300mm. Is the 55-300 equal to the 50-200 in quality and performance, at lease in the 55-200 range?

While on my recent at sea boondoggle to Hawaii, I again found the 2 kit lenses (18-55 and 50-200) to be excellent - quite unbeatable. I am starting to figure out, that I should probably just keep what I have and be happy. I read a post recently - that referred to one gentleman who is very good at air show shots. The poster said that he never goes beyond 200mm. Maybe based on that - I should just keep practicing and just work on getting better.

I have the 50 - 200 as well and I really have never been very happy with it. I am 2000% happier with the new lens.

There is a nationally known air show guy (forget his name) who only uses a 200mm. He gets shots I would love to claim but he also gets access to better spots and can get set-up where the 200 is plenty (plus he is much more skilled than me). I have discovered that I really like to be between 200 and 300 for most of my better air shots. I actually lust for 100-400 but 70-300 has done what I needed in most cases

Iplan togo to the Dayton Air show this Sat so I will be really giving the new lens a test. Last year it was overcast and I ended-up with no pics I really liked. Hopefully the only problem this year will be the 90 degree temps.

Congratulation with your toy.
I thought is not only the lens. Your last captured image is the best !
