Looking at a 300mm f/4. What is the IQ with these? Coated or uncoated? Worth any money or not? The one I'm looking at is a 300mm Orestegon f/4. Any word or info is welcome. These were made up till the 1990's so they are not true antiques. Saying that it is a screw mount and all manual. All thoughts or info more than welcome.

Sorry Dawg,

I somehow seem to remember that I've read about those lenses... are you sure it is a "Orestegon", not "Orestegor"?

Test shot (same website): http://www.praktica-users.com/img/pics/pv_zirafa.jpg

A discussion about Meyer optics, not really your lens, but might be a start for further reading: http://forum.m42screw.com/meyer-opti...100-t8522.html

Not exactly your lens, but Mayer is mentioned: http://www.jr-worldwi.de/photo/index.html?lenses.html

Hope that helps for a start.

Regards,
Th.

Hi Dawg,

Not much help, but SPLOSdb does mention the lens, but unfortunately does not rate it or have much info about it. The Meyer 200 f4 is, however rated (**) or very good, so there's a little indication, IMO, that they were at least capable of making a very nice telephoto lens. The 2004 prices quoted were $145 new, and $110 used in EX condition.

The caveat, of course, that a single well-received lens model is not indicative of quality across the brand -- antyone can get lucky -- but I think that the fact that they made a pretty nice 200 gives them at least some credibility.

I'd probably take a chance on it at the right price. . . but I'd keep my spending limit pretty low.

That's OK TH. It is a Meyer Optik Gorlitz Orestegor. Already mine as soon as I can get off work and pay for it. LOL Looks in almost new condition. I've been wanting a 300mm f/4 and this one was in my price range. Don't mind the ALL MANUAL aspect of it at all as long as the IQ is semi acceptable. If not I'll let some other happy camper on EBAY have it.

Thanks Scott. In their day Meyer Gorlitz was a very well respected lens maker. I did do some research and found mostly good things about the brand. Pentacon was the newer name for the company. They at one time were as well thought of as Ziess.
We'll see when it gets here. Thanks to all for their replies.
