I have been walking around with my *ist DS, Pentax 1.7 AF adapter and Takumar 300mm f1:4. The adapter seems to focus quite well in bright light and the 510mm focal length is just about hand holdable provided the shutter speed is fast, which of course it is in bright light.

So I am thinking of the next stage, I would like to capture a few nocturnal animals, OK, not likely to get auto focus at night but then I tried a laser pointer, one that shows a 'smiley face' on the target. The camera does seem to AF on this in otherwise darkness about 25% of the time but I expect more if I can mount the pointer on the camera so it always hits the AF spot, yet to be proved though!

I am hoping for something like 30 or maybe 50' range using the most powerful flash I have and perhaps using a bit of Fresnel lens sheet to concentrate it a bit.

No doubt this will be a rather heavy rig to carry around but thats ok, I am a big boy! I am aiming for a hand holdable, maybe gun stock configuration.

What do you think of my prospects for success?

I bought a couple of bits for the project today, it seems to be impossible to find a two stage push-button switch but of course there are ways around that!

Try the switch from a three-way lamp.

Thanks Dawg, the switching requirement is rather special but one version under development looks quite promising!

Hi John,
I can see you're well geared up for the job, and the switch arrangement is ingenious, and no doubt effective. I'll wish you sucess, and follow your progress with interest. ... Jack.

I need to pick up a stereo plug tomorrow then I can do the initial tests!

And before anyone mentions it, no the police in New Zealand will not shoot me for carrying a camera around.

Hey John!, that looks lethal, ... I wouldn't want to carry it around in the UK these days though, my feet woudn't touch the floor, I'd be inside the nick ( cop shop) in very little time. Things must be more relaxed in your part of the globe. ... Jack
