Default Pentax Takumar 500 f4.5

Hi all,
Once again it's that time of the year when I start looking forward to the summer season and the return of the Moto GP to Melbourne & Philip Island, the best racetrack in the world, sorry for my bias. But again I think I'de like to get a longer lens, but I was wondering if anyone had the Takumar 500 f4.5 screw mount & a DA*300, and could give me a comparison of the IQ between the two.

A big ask I know, but if I don't ask ...

Thanks

Simon

great lens. quite large tho. at 20''
you'll need a a sturdy tripod. the lens is about 7.5 pounds.
you can't beat the IQ..
if someone finds a parts lens, please contact me..

Hi Simon,

If I had to choose between the two, I'd easily pick the DA*300. I had a chance to compare it directly with my FA*300/4.5, and it's a touch sharper wide open, so I'd say it's the best of the mid speed Pentax XX*300s, which is saying a lot. There is a possible downside, and that is that it's an SDM lens -- and there are no absolutely compatible TCs available. The only one that would be guaranteed to work well with AF is the Pentax F 1.7x AFA, and that one focuses inside the TC. Since Pentax has pushed back the introduction of their SDM TC, it's hard to say when a compatible TC might be avaiable.

The Pentax 500/4.5 is a great lens optically, but it's very large and heavy at over 7 lbs as Roy stated. My preference for a lens in this FL/Speed class is a 300/2.8 (all that have ever been available for the K mount are excellent) + the P F 1.7x AFA, which gives you 510mm f4.8 with AF at a considerably shorter, more compact lens and they'll weigh in at 5-6 lbs. In addition, you'd get the versatility of a 300/2.8, and a 420/4 with a 1.4x TC. The entry price will probably be considerably higher, but I think the difference in portability is substantial.

I wrote a pretty detailed post, which might not be totally relevant, to 06goat a little while ago. . .

simon,
this not a lens you take out and use..
it's a a lens that takes you along to shoot..
as above.. you have to have a sturdy tripod
