Which one do you mean? The Pentax A*, FA* or the newer off-brand? I expect you don't ned to ask about the Pentaxes. I use mine (A*) more for landscape than for portrait, something many would find a bit odd.

From what I can find it is a Samyang/Polar 85mm 1.4 that is sold under a bunch of labels. The Vivitar name has been sold to a Korean company and the Polar lens seems to be their Vivitar Series 1 lens.

The Polar lens seems to get good reviews, although not all that well constructed, but seems to give sharp image results. I find it hard to believe it is as good as the Pentax A* 85mm 1.4, but then it is far less expensive.

Vivitar has been sold to Sakar - this is one of their first three lens offerings under the Vivitar brand. The other two are T mount mirror lenses.

thanks e&P
i wonder if the series1 will be marketed again.
if so they'll have to measure up..
also it's a MF lens and there are just too many great MF lenses.. at least it does have the 'A' setting.. at least the price is affordable to all of us.. the pentax at 1200-1500usd is just not an option to many here..
i'm slowly digging my self out from under the dog house due to my k20d buy..
she just doesn't see the 14gig sensor..

I don't have that lens but I heard many great reviews on that lens. This lens is on my list to buy.

I have this lens,Vivitar S1 85mm 1.4,it is very sharp with great color rendering IMO.Beware of some QC issues with this lens and inspect it well for dust inside, lens coating blems and stuck aperture blades.I experience all these issues and finally got a GREAT copy from B+H and was worth the hassle. It is great wide open and should satisfy most with great IQ...
Here is a Flicker group on this lens.....

Here is a recent shot I took with this lens...I was amazed at the detail as I was developing this RAW image in LR as the tables and chairs were clearly visible in the original file....if you want a fast lens in this focal length this one is a good one for the price.....and I know I haven't posted in a while.....
