i've got the manfroto 679bm(only thing i have bought @ retail} that's <50usd it's a 3 section so it's long when broke down. all you need is an up/down mount. i use a ball but it can get away from you really quick.. here's a couple oflinks to monopod technique.

I also use the 679 and works fine with the weight of my sigma 120-300 2.8. It's good bang-for-the-buck and you don't need anything heavier duty unless you see yourself using 400mm 2.8 type lenses. I don't use a ballhead on it though, but I have a tripod collar.
