Default Good middle range zoom for K7

Hello Pentax fans!
I'm thinking on a K7 as an all purpose-travel dslr. I need a premium, luminous middle range zoom lens to shot wide angle landscapes, portraits and random picks. No sports, no action picks, no ultra zoom needed. May be some macros and few night scenes. Does such lens exist? I appreciate your advices.

All I know is, don't get the 50-200... Ordo, how do you like your K-7? That is what I am thinking of getting.

I don't own a K7. Thinking about that or a Canon 7d for travel and casual picks. My main camera is still a Mamiya 7, 6X7 medium format film camera. Once in a year I shot a good pick and i scan it to 60 Mb. I also have a Lumix ZS3 but that's for fun.
Looking for a premium lens here. Something that can give me a good 30" print.

Well, I am planning on the Pentax K-7... then strategically buying my lenses... there is 40mm Limited that yields really fine detail and colour... then I will go on to the telephoto lenses and get one, probably up to 300mm... I hope all goes well, no matter what you buy. Take care.

what focal range you looking at at? if you jsut want a good standard lens then the pentax da* 16-50mm f2.8 is a good lens - but there are some serious quality control issues with it in the past, not sure if they have got it sorted or not yet so might have to send it back if you dont get a good one

its supposed to be a very sharp lens with sdm focusing and is weather sealed so along with the k7 you dont need to worry about bad weather stopping you shooting

cheaper options would be the tamron 17-50mm f2.8 very sharp reat reviews on this lens no sdm though just normal screw drive

i have the sigma 18-50 f2.8 and like it - maybe not quite so good optically as tamron - but its soon to be replaced with an hsm 17-50mm f2.8

the pentax 16-45 f4 is supposed to be quite good and reasonble price though

if you have access to a shop that sells pentax then go and try and get a good da* otherwise unless you willing to deal with hassle of sending things back get the tammy or sigma would be my choice

The camera I am looking at comes with a kit lense... might as well have it... Then there is the 40 mm Limited... The 16-45 is one I would like to get a little later, either before or after the telephoto... but that is down the road. No Pentax shops locally... I wish. Many thanks.

dont think there is anything in the pentax lens line up that meets that range - is the 17-70 i think but its only f4

there is the 18-250 which is supposed to be quite good but think its 3.5-6.3

you might have to look elsewhere to get that kind of range

ok did some checking only nikon seems to do a 18-105 and its a f3.5 to 5.6 - far as i can tell you cant get a lens like this in anything close to f2 or even f2.8 even for canon

if you dont mind 2 lenses to fill the gap then back to pentax da* 16-50mm f2.8 and the da* 50-135mm f2.8 (supposed to be a fantastic lens) - both of these are pentax premium lenses and weather sealed

Sigma, I thiink, has just released a 18 - 125mm with the super-duper high speed focus motor built in for the K-mount. Not sure of the aperture range, but it sounds like the range you are looking for. I have a sigma 24-135mm f/2.8 - 4.5, which I like a lot. It is a bit large and heavy, but it is what is on my camera about 90% of the time. It is a discontinued lens, though still available used. Tamron has a current model 24-135mm which is pretty highly regarded as well.
