Tell me about it - I am using old K and M lenses mostly, for portraits the 135/2.5 or the 85/2, so I know what you mean...

Anyway - that's not my point. Of course th DOF will make a big difference and is one of the most important things to get right - cover all the things you want from your model but also separate it from the background. What I was talking about is the "soft" feeling at wide open shots people seem to worry about way too often... with a good lens and a spot-on focus a good lens/setup will have enough detail IN the soft-looking image.

I took your first shot and did a little postprocessing (not the standard USM, but kind of a "refocus") to show what I mean, you can clearly see the more detailed look (and of course - the DOF is still small):


All I wanted to say is: "it's all there" - it's up to you to use that information in the image or not. So again - I think you got a good lens here to work with for such shots.
