Default 300/4 smc

Probably been discussed before so apologies ahead of time for not looking, it's late and I'm running out of batteries. Anyway, how does this lens compare to other 300mm offerings? Is it sharp? As sharp as the Tamron 300/2.8 or just so-so in comparison? It's a lot lighter and cheaper. Thanks.

Hi John,

I have this lens and whilst it's very enjoyable to use - and in the past I've twinned it with a Vivitar x2 for just about acceptable hand-held (propped against something) shots, and the build quality is fantastic all-metal construction (though it's still not too large or heavy) - I don't find it particularly sharp. Very nice lens though.

I have an AFA arriving soon and I'm looking forward to seeing the quality of shots it takes in combination with the 300.

Thanks for the info. Not sure I'd need yet another not very sharp 300mm lens, got a few of those already

Ive only used a handful 300mm lenses in general so not sure I can offer much aide but which 300mm f/4 are u speaking of? theres quite a few out there

edit: ah the pentax smc, sorry i didnt see that in there. Ive seen good pics taken with it actually and almost picked one up, due to it being extremely cheap second hand on ebay. If youre in a budget id say it might be worth a gamble

I was going to ask the same question as to which 300 f4 lens you were talking about. I have two different ones (A*300 and DA*300) and there are others (the M*300, etc.). If you are talking about the Pentax K-mount 300 without a *, it's considered quite good - not as optically good as the * lenses but not that far behind.

It's listed as the Pentax 300/4 SMC so I'll assume it's not a * lens. In all honesty I don;t know enough about Pentax naming to give any more info than that. It's got a 77mm filter ring but not sure if it has a tripod collar. No mention of an A so I assume it's just a PK lens which if I'm at all close to understanding things would make it a Pentax M-300/4 SMC. I assume the SMC means special multi coated or something close.

Then I may be wrong John. You might need to confirm the exact model.

I have a SMC Takumar 300/4 (M42) and I just assumed that it was this one as soon as you mentioned it being cheaper.

It's likely to be this lens: http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/lenses/p...le/K300f4.html , rather than http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/lenses/p...le/M300f4.html . It's supposed to be quite good, not quite up to the * category, but well thought of.

Slower is often sharper (and much cheaper). My Taks top out at 200, with the SuperTak 200/4 (US$37) and the TeleTak 200/5.6 (US$29) which is a small marvel. My only 300 is an Alpa-Chinon 300/5.6 (US$27) that is also quite sharp. These are all M42's, not exactly the latest word but they'll do. When a faster lens is often used stopped-down a bit to improve DOF, crispness, etc, maybe it makes sense to go for a slower bargain that starts off as sharp as a pricier lens that must be stopped down for similar performance. Just a thought.
