Default Vivitar 400mm f/6.3 T4 lens. The lens

From today. Shown mounted on a Pentax K10D using a CS T4 to M42 adapter.

Beautiful and cool... but slightly frightening. Can you use it handheld?

Yes...even with a 2X TC that makes it a 800mm (1200mm 35mm equivalent) lens. With the TC there is no focus confirmation. Just too much glass in the way for that.

With TC.....


These are hand held without a TC. 650mm (35mm
equivalent) on my Pentax K7.

The advantage of a manual focus lens when shooting birds is the manual lens can be focused on a bird hiding amongst the branches and an auto focus lens will more than likely focus on the branches instead. From 30-35 feet distance then cropped.
