Default Vivitar 120-600mm f5.6-f8 1:6X lens compatiblity with newer Nikon DSLRs?

Does anyone know which newer Digital SLRs a Vivitar 120-600mm f5.6-f8 1:6X Lens is compatible with? My dad gave me his and I'm looking to buy a Nikon digital SLR someday. I goto Colorado alot and have a window mounted tripod adapter and would like to get some pics of Elk, Moose (never seen one) and a bear (ha - I've only seen one in my lifetime in the wild).

thanks everyone.

It depends on what type of mount the lens has. Do you know what camera he used it on?

If the lens is a Nikon mount as well I would try asking in the Nikon lens forum. I believe there are issues with non-AI lenses frying the electronics of Nikon DSLRs as well as I believe a lack of backward compatibility for old lenses in some of the new bodies. Hope this helps.

Default Vivitar 120-600mm

Just a quick note on the 120-600mm by Vivitar, I owned the lens when it was first launched and sold it for reasons that escape me now, but had looked high and low for one ever since. Luckily I found one and paid just over $200.00 (happily). It has very low PF (certainly less than my Nikkor 70-300 which I flogged for a song) It's sharp at all aperatures on a DX camera, can't comment on FX but I have great success with it. Yes, it's HEAVY, but it is also buttery smooth to zoom and focus. Contrast is good, certainly not as good as new prime glass but close to most modern zooms and the construction is head and shoulders above anything on store shelves, $5,000.00 Nikkors not included. If you can grab one for the price of a couple B+W filters or a 77mm Nikon polarizing filter DO IT!! On a truly insane note, I attached my TC200 to it and took some moon shots in -30 weather, it stayed smooth throughout the shoot. I froze up badly.

I have a copy of the 120-600 and it can take some very nice pics but I only used mine for a couple of weeks before adding a Tamron 200-500/5.6 because I needed something faster in the grey Northwest weather. Will probably sell the 120-600 one of these days.
