I now own 3 Zeiss lenses. A 135mm Sonnar, a 180mm Sonnar, a 300mm Sonnar and a bid in on a 50mm f/1.8 Pancolar. The IQ of these is very very good...about on a level with the Pentax A* lenses if not better. The Zeiss Contax are supposed to be even better. Congrats on the conversion.

Really interested to read about this IO.

I was about to buy one of the Samyang / Vivitar (and other names - all the same lens) 85/1.4 when I came across a Contax MMJ 85/1.4 in gorgeous condition for just $150 more. I had looked at the Leitax (not feasible for me to send the lense over there considering the importation taxes I'd have to pay on it's return) so I will buy the Contax and then either have my local repair guy convert it to PK (if possible) or if he can't do it then order the Leitax kit and have the same local guy fit for me. Excited now !

This is interesting too, read what he says underneath the photo : http://www.pbase.com/image/44705399

Morning Frog, I have just acquired a Contax 85/f2.8. During my search I came across a Contax 85/f1.4. It was larger and faster than what I needed or wanted, but I emailed David at Leitax and asked him about a conversion mount for the lens since it was not on his list. His reply indicated that he had a conversion mount for M42 but not the K mount for the lens. Here is a link for the M42 conversion process...
In looking at the procedure, it looks like the f1.4 mount design is common to both the 35/f1.4 and the 85/f1.4, so the mechanical design is different than that of the f2.8 series lenses. My thoughts are that for what ever reason Leitax went with the M42 rather than a K mount. It also looks like Letiax may have gone for the greatest commonality across camera bodies with the M42.

The pbase link you provided was shot in 2005, and I think that Leitax was just developing their mounts and may not have been available. The K mount conversion on both the 28 an 85 lock into the camera just as any K, M, A, FA or DA K mount lens does and works perfectly.

I have been in contact with another user on the 28. He just acquired one and did the conversion himself in 15 "fun filled" minutes - with the results being perfect - well he did get a greasy fingerprint smudge on the rear element so the first image produced some terror, until he realized it was due to the smudge. So, I am thinking that I may convert my 85 this weekend myself and see what happens...

hope that helps...

Thank you IO - more very good info. Yes I'm aware the 85/1.4 is an M42 conversion, spotted that on the site - no problem as I already have some very nice M42 lenses and adaptors.

From that old pBase link it's interesting that the Contax will fit straight onto the K mount (just can't lock) and are a near identical registration distance too.

I have a feeling my 'local old guy' can do these conversions for US$30-40 a pop. Fingers crossed - I'll ask him next time I'm in the mall.

The story is that Pentax and Zeiss were cooperating very closely on the mount and on a lens - the K 28/f2 which is essentially the same as the Zeiss 28/f2. Then for some reason, Zeiss teamed with Yachica and re-started the Contax line. The Contax CZ 28/f2 is also the same as the K 28/f2. So yes the two mounts have a lot in common.

Rico over on the Pentax Forums has forced the C/Y lens on a K mount, and has modified them with his trusty dremel.

I've done that twice myself but used a lathe to get it done. Just neater that way. The registry distance is so close that by thinning the flange thickness a little they fit right on.
