Default Sigma 170 - 500 APO

I had an 135-400 (first series) that had virtually no damping, and slid out when tilted downwards, and I have read that others in this same series had the same problem. The 170-500 is also discontinued - does anyone know how well the first series of this lens (non DG) holds its length?

I do not know about that lens but my Bigma will move if tilted down.

I do not have experience with this 170-500. But my big Sigma, the 80-400 OS is dampened pretty well and will not move if tilted unless you give it a good shaking.

The second series of the 135-400 added a zoom lock. My first series lens (bought used I have no idea what it was like new) was so bad that it would move on a tripod if deviated much from the horizontal, which was intolerable. Sigma no longer serviced lenses that old, but offered me a discounted trade-in on a new 120-400 OS HSM which does not have the problem, and I think that would be true of all the later lenses. I assume the first series 170-500 would be in the same situation as the 135-400. I am inclined to think buying one used over the internet would be rather risky.
