Default tamron 70-200 f2.8 + teleconverter

Hello
I couldn't find answer to this anywhere. Does anyone know if you could fit sigma 2x APO DG EX converter to this lens? I don't want to spend 200 quid just to find out i can't use it.
I know you'll say converters are crap but I just bought this tamron and can't buy sigma 150-500 now, especially that my wife doesn't know about this one yet.

Thanks
Greg

Just guessing but I would think the answer is no. The Sigma TC needs a lens with a very large recess before the rear element to fit. You will probably need to look for other options.

Hi Greg,

Unfortunately, I don't have the combination, so I can't say for sure. As John stated, the 2x Sigma TC needs a recessed rear element lens to fit, and although I am pretty sure that the rear element diameter would be large enough, I really can't say if the recess would be sufficient to clear. I'm pretty confident that the 1.4x will fit, but I'm less sure with the 2x.

My Tokina 80-200 f2.8 AT-X Pro AF2 easily has enough recess to allow the Sigma 2x to fit, but my Tamron SP 80-200 f2.8 Adaptall 2 has a much shorter recess, and would be a lot closer, but would probably work IMO (I don't use 2x TCs), so there's a big ??? in my mind if I were to guess.

I do know of a user who has the Sigma 2x EX APO TC and the EX 80-200 2.8 APO (screw drive, no HSM) and this combo does work, both fit and AF. I don't think there is enough difference between the DG version of the TC to make much of a difference, so the DG version should work with the older screw mount EX 80-200 f2.8 if you can find one. The other option would be to find a used Tamron or Kenko MC7 AF 2x TC to use with the Tamron AF 70-200 f2.8.

Other options would be to find a used Tokina 80-400 f4.5-5.6 AT-X or a used Sigma 135-400 f4.5-5.6 APO. Both are good lenses. Both have been reviewed as a bit soft past 300mm, but the same could be said for adding a 2x TC to just about any zoom, even a very good one like the Tamron.
