Default Almost eternal quest for a do-it-mostly-all zoom

Pentax 17-70 or 18-135? They are never very different in price.

18-135 is WR with twice the telephoto reach, but has not been as highly rated. It is about 80g or 3 ounces lighter.

17-70 is constant aperture but with some (historical? hysterical?) SDM issues.

Which would be preferred for a walk about lens for most uses on a K-5IIs or K-30 model?

Well, it's clear Pentax is pushing the 18-135 with both cameras now, offering kits with both bodies. Personally, I'd probably go with the 18-135. I like both the WR (that goes with the WR bodies), the fast-focusing (and apparently more reliable) ring motor and the longer focal range. No, it's not really fast, aperture-wise, but on balance the 17-70's constant f/4.0 is an average of the 18-135's f/3.5-5.6. Plus, Pentax's latest lens roadmap includes what looks like a 135-400 that would eventually go with the 18-135.
