Cropped versions
![]() ![]() Are the crops an improvement or do they add to the original images? Ira |

Hi Ira,
Whoa! -- With Daylight Saving Time, and 57° the last few days (it is colder now tho) I'm definitely already in Spring mode, but in Chicago, I realize that that's like being Pollyanna in Washington, DC. I like the crops better. In the evergreen shot, it keeps the focus on the textural/color differences between the snow, icicles, and the needles on the branches. On #2, the crop focuses on the play of the shadows on the snow, and again the textures of the bark against the soft evenness of the snow. I know that I don't have your artistic "eye" (probably never will, and I'm jealous. . .), but I'm usually pretty decisive about what I like -- even if it's for the "wrong" reasons -- so take it for what it's worth (luckily, my opinions come pretty cheap). Hello, Ira,
I think that I like the crops for the texture, the second one works especially well for me, and I like the originals for sending to family/friends who may live in a warmer climate and would enjoy seeing how it is around your house. Wish I could do that well with snow, since we have so much of it here in Colorado. : ) I keep blowing out the highlights. Regards, Lawrence |

Hey Ira, the second one works for me! We have the never ending winter also, it got all the way up to 34F today, the big thaw.

I like the crops better, too. By the way, you aren't the only one looking out on a white landscape - there was a dusting of snow last night, and over an inch on the balcony railing this evening. The outside thermometer says 24 F at the moment. I took some pictures this morning, but they were all lousy. We'll see if I can get better ones tomorrow.

Great series Ira,
nr3 and nr1 (in that order) are my fav's. The idea of making crops is not bad. Sometimes I wish for a 35" computer screen to be able to view the pictures I take. Ronny |

Thanks for the comments folks. As for the exposure, I bracketed 0.7 over and under and found that adjusting the shadows and highlights for the standard exposure worked best.
