I actually found one at rest. Yours are monarch caterpillars, the ranger at Prairie State Park here in Missouri said mine is a swallowtail catterpillar. They sure look similar.
Good catch Tom, I've been looking for them here, but this is the only one I've found. |

Wow, those are awesome shots. The only ones I ever see are the little grey fuzzy ones that turn into ugly brown moths.
