Hi Roy,

You are a brave man! I've been tempted to take a few lenses apart to see if I could adjust them to get them to live up to reputation. You've motivated me to take a closer look at them. Unfortunately, they're not Pentax primes, so I'll be on my own, but I think that it might be worth looking into and experimenting with.

most all primes will be similar except for the macro lenses that have the barrel that extends in front of the focus ring. i've got another of these with oil in the aperture. should be interesting. last week i did a tak300f4. it was about the same.

as i said. denatured alcohol. i tried acetone but it evaporates too fast and if there is any actual paint it'll take it off. biggest 2 problems i have is keeping finger oils off the glass when cleaning and those damn LITTLE SCREWS.. magnetize your screw driver.. the rare earth magnets in an old hard drive are great. lenses anyone ???

Does this take care of fungus? or is that permanant?

My Super Takumar 200mm doesn't come apart quite the same. I used rubbing alcohol and it just didn't do as well as I would have liked. Got to go back in again. Just glad I'm not the only one that fools around with my old lenses. Sometimes a light tap with a small piece of hard wood can get a reluctant lens ring to start moving if the eraser doesn't and you have no spanner. Place an edge of the hard wood in the slot and give it a light tap. I usually let my son-in-law hold it in case I slip I won't damage anything of value.

nick,
as for fungus i believe, from reading, that it depends on the amount of infection. if the coatings are destroyed then they are destroyed. lighter infections are curable.
if you try this , be very careful with the spanner as it'll get you in trouble very fast. i take everything apart using a clear plastic shallow box over a white background. don't drop any of the lenses when cleaning. i've ruined one lens that way already. fotunately it only cost me shipping but it was an excellent lens.

Cheap latex gloves like food prep people use comes to mind.... don't have to the the surgical ones. Often even seen bags of 10 pair in Dollar Stores.

Thin white all cotton archive gloves. Keeps the fingerprints away.
