They were right outside our dining room window on our deck. Probably 6-8 feet away. Then used the Sigma 70-300 at about 260mm. 2 of them aren't even cropped. |

Junko's are hard to get right...That black on top robs the detail too much. I've tried and tried and no really good results!

I was looking over a directory and was reminded of a couple of shots that sort of belonged in this discussion. Last summer, over several days, I watched a starling raising a brood in a hole in a light pole at a softball field. Here, she is just landing with lunch for her little ones.

She didn't care for my presence, however, and was not shy in letting me know as she dive-bombed the guy with the camera

Finally, I'm posting this one because it's probably the greatest distance I've every gotten anything marginally usable on a BIF shot on a small bird. I was watching this red-bellied woodpecker through my lens from my side patio....probably 75 feet away in the top of a tree...when I happened to catch him going from one section of the tree to another. 100% crop.

Cool find. The second one is almost impossible to track focus. The set up for stationary birds is entirely different form this one at 1/2500 sec and iso 1600. ![]() It was already a bright day but with dense vegetation though. You had no time to adjust on site to switch to BIF mode at all. Either you go for BIF or non-bif. Nothing in between Daniel |

Recently there has not been much luck in getting small bird BIF images.
There is cluttered background of images of a GBH rookery in Toronto I went this afternoon. Good part is that once I was there, the birds had to come to me. I was within 100 ft of around 10 of them. That was the easy part. The hard part is that it is in the middle of the wetland/marsh . All their nests are around 90 ft high and with dense trees all around them. I could hear them a lot. Majority of the time that was about it. Taking pictures were just pain. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() At long last a luck shots . A so-called unobstructed and heavily cropped one ![]() Daniel |
