Looks like you are finding the sweetspot on that lens. Also, looks as though you had much better light to work with. I am using a friends laptop so I can't view the exif information. What shutter speed are you using for these shots?

Thanks guys. The sweet spot is still out there somwhere but I'm closing on it!
The photo of the downy was taken at 1/90 sec and f/8. The one of the female cardinal was at 1/180 sec at f/11. The bright afternoon light helps as it is coming over my shoulder and painting them really well. the female cardinal was almost untouched in PP! The house finch was at 1/90sec and f/6.7
