Hmm in normal bounce (ceiling/wall) situation, I have the front-facing preflash hitting the subject .
But in this situation, I have the weak back-facing preflash hitting the umbrella first then the subject.

Although it is all theory, the result seems quite obvious.

I believe at the end of the day I have to meter the flash manually (not a huge deal) instead of through ptll.

You'll be able to tell us the truth of it when it arrives and you've used it! I will just wait till that day arrives and then know for a fact how well it works!
