This photo of a Common Tern I took yesterday really told me I need a longer lens, This is not the best I have ever taken, but these suckers fly fast.

Birds in flight are a real challenge. I would probably call 5% of the shots I take worth looking at twice and the real keepers are closer to 1%.

oh, a longer lens will definately not help the problem.. what you need more is speed..
you know the lens equation,, price, speed, quality you get your choice of two or get out your wallet.. roy |

Thank you everyone,
and Dawg, I was using the Tamron 70-300mm, and yes I need more speed, but I very seldom shoot birds in flight that far out, he was about 100yards out and moving fast. I still havent decided on a long lens, but I did manage to find a Tamron 1.4x teleconverter in Indiana today, that should help the birds sitting shots. Now I need a 300mm f/2.8 then I can shoot them moving. |

the longer the lens , the more difficult to shoot. i've got a 500/4.5 and getting BIFs in flight with it is dam^ near impossible. the FOV is 5degrees with it. just finding something moving is tough enough..

Nice try and you did well. Roy is right. Finding your flying subject, keeping that within your viewfinder and focusing the same time even for 300mm is difficult . Not to mention 500mm. Until the new DA*300mmF4 comes out , there is no new 300mm prime lens available . Some of my recent ones http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=25651455 Daniel |
