we had 4, 3.2+ghz machines donated to us a week ago. 2 of them were pretty much toast.. 3 are great stable machines now but the 3.4 is giving me a lot of trouble. since i'll be tearing it apart this week i took a look under the hood. is this a heat sink or what?? just fooling around with the fa50 at f13 and onboard flash..

we have got those in our dell's at work also. basically they are heat sinks w/heat pipes. lots of the dells from 3-5 years ago had a batch of bad capacitors on the motherboards. check to see if any are bulging or already leaking.

thanks K,
that's what these are.. Dell's..
this one defies logic.. it's got to be mobo related.. when i start the machine the main fan will start gaining RPM but the d*** thing never stops. it gets faster and faster and faster............... i've got to turn it off to stop it... when i do get it to boot my diagnostic program says all is fine.. of course it does, nothing is wrong..

oh, i've got it strapped to the floor to eliminate the chance of it going airborn:blah:
