When I was doing my due diligence to get a moderately-priced lens to 500mm, the three best for the Nikon were-- Nikon 300 f/4 + TC Bigma 50-500 Tamron 200-500 Di The zooms are in the ~$800-900 range new. Since my budget couldn't stretch, I patiently looked for used on eBay. The availability/numbers of the Bigma played a large part in scoring my used Bigma for $535 delivered while they usually can be had for ~$600-700 used. My review of the Bigma... http://www.dcresource.com/forums/sho...762#post181762 |

How about the extra $400 for the 10mb k10 vs the 6mp k100?

It matters what you are going to try and get it to do for your type of photos. My reasons for going with the K10 are. 10mp vs 6mp: The 10mp was important to me since I spend most of my time chasing wild life lots of time the photo I want is only a very small part of the entire photo I took. If you are going to need or want to crop (one of them fancy camera terms) another way of sayin it and I like it a bunch better is cut out what you want to use a lot, I figure the extra 4mp would be important. Dust and weather resistant seals: I read more than once about having to clean out the dust or dirt from on of these DSLR cameras and it sure sounded like some thing I don't want to have to do very often. Looks like it would be a big job and you better know what you are doing. Shake Reduction: Sure did like the idea I wouldn't have to use a tripod or a monopod all the time out in the woods they are a pain. Takes to long to get set up to take a picture and not the most fun thing to carry. I kind of figure any one of the above reasons is worth the extra $400.00 so that would make the other two things free. Thanks, Roger. I like the way you imbed the close-up onto the larger shot. Very effective. I assumed you zoomed in to get that but i suppose many of those shots were at full zoom to begin with and cropping is esential. Certainly the 10mb would come in handy there. If there is no downside to the 10mb (noise) vs the 6mb, cropabilty is certainly a virtue.
Apparently the k100 does not have the weatherproof seals. That's a big factor. Is the anit-shake on the k10 better than that on the k100? I asumed they had the same anti-shake performance. |

I haven't found any problems with noise so far. Where I find I have to crop a lot is when I am doing in flight shots. That was the case with my FZ30. I haven't even tried any inflight shots with the new one yet. I plan on doing that after I get more comfortable with it.
