That's actually a good question, and I'm not sure there is a way. If the person let the camera picture numbers be consecutive, then you should be able to tell by the file name of the picture (that's what I do, think it's the default setting). However, it is rather easy to confuse/change the counter - just put in a card with a picture file numberthat is different and the camera will start numbering from that number (several people who upgrade their cameras have reported accidentally putting in a disk from their old one that had pictures on it. Their count suddenly goes from 0003 to 6007 - the next number after the picture that was on the disk).

I was able to reset the counter though. Changed the filename on my computer. Then on the camera; Rec. Mode > Memory > File No. (unchecked) then I reset camera settings. Now back to 0001. |

I believe there's an option in the service menu that tells you the true figure of photos taken.
I can't remember how to access this menu but it involves holding certain buttons down while switching the camera on. Plus it's only accessible with certain firmwares. I'm sure someone knows which buttons and which firmware you need to access it. |

[INFO] + [AE-L] while power-on
followed by : [MENU], [MENU], [INFO] within 5 seconds [Right], [OK] (to enable debug mode) In Set-up menu, choose "SYSTEM TEST" Set "1" on parameter "Test Item 1" Press [OK] twice to leave. Shot once and read the counter : RLS: xxxx Remove Debug mode : Power off,[INFO] + [AE-L] while power-on followed by : [MENU], [MENU], [INFO] within 5 seconds [Right], [OK] (to disable debug mode) |
