Thanks Scott and Roy for the bird identification (I was looking in the wrong part of the guide) and I'm sure it's a Killdeer - pictures match perfectly. I have a shot that isn't very good of it doing the "broken wing" act, and the chirps from what I think were the babies sounded very close to me at one point (brush too thick to find them without disturbing things, so I didn't explore further.
Thank you Roger for the complement, itsinteresting how you can see so much in what would otherwise be considered a mundane location. |

Very nice shots. You probably did hear Killdeer babies--they are all around here right now. They are reall cute--very long legs and small body.

Nice series, Harriet.
The blackbird is Brewer's Blackbird (no Rustys in CA) The ducks are Mallards The squirrels are ground squirrels (Beechy's - also known as the California Ground Squirrel - is the common one in Southern CA south and west of the mountains, but I can't see the backs on these - no Prarie Dogs in CA, either) The Killdeer is correctly identified by Scott and Roy Keep them coming. |

Thanks for the bird identification - I had thought before that our blackbirds were Brewers but then I started second-guessing myself (there doesn't sound like much difference between the two in the summer). I really don't know anything about birds and other critters - I love to take pictures of them, and then I'll think about trying to identify them. I really should get a guide to flowers, because I take so many pictures of them (my favorite subject, and thanks for the complements on them).
