Wow! That's awesome! How close were you? And how did you manage to get that close?!

That is super! I like how the background helps to frame the subject.

He was hiding in the brush along the trail and I actually had to step back to get my 300mm lens to focus.
First time birding that I wished I had a shorter lens like my 80-200mm zoom. Tom |

LOL! Friday when I was out taking pictures of wildflowers, I noticed a couple of birds flying around and watched them for a few minutes. It was a raven chasing off/beating up on a red-tailed hawk. Unfortunately I only had the 50-135 on the camera and the couple of pictures I took are from too far away. By the time I changed lenses, the raven was no-where to be found and the hawk was soaring with another one, I assume it's mate. One of the two pictures was of the raven right above the hawk, attacking it and you can almost see the hawk's wings under the larger raven's wings. It WOULD have been a cool shot if I had had the right lens on (sigh!). Why is it I always have the wrong lens on at a special moment like that?!

I understand Harriet, when I was getting ready to go out, I picked up the 80-200mm Zoom, but then put it down because I normally need the extra reach of the 300mm.
Even so I like the results of the close shot with the Grouse looking directly at me. Tom |

That grouse is really great, but I truly understand the feeling of getting caught with the wrong lens. It's happened too often to me.

Great shot Tom. Lucky he stayed there for you! The long zooms are so popular because they give you some grace in not having to change lenses. But then they aren't as sharp so you end up trading off not matter what you do!
