I visited a butterfly house yesterday, with the big macro rig to see if it was workable.
It gave some great shots, and by pointing the flashhead towards the lens, or staight out, and varying the aperture, I could capture most subjects. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As always C&C welcome, and more of this series can be seen on my Flickr site. Dal |

It is workable, all right. These are outstanding! What do you mean by "pointing the flashhead towards the lens"? Angled down?

![]() I have modified it slightly so that the flash now sits over the lens ![]() And can be angled up to direct the light better ![]() That and a wider different aperture seems to work well. I think the settings were ISO200, f18/20/22 for the close shots and f5.6/8 for the distance shots. The addition of the ball head means I can put the flash into the traditional bracket position with detaching anything. I can't imagine them getting a whole lot better than that! That wing is amazing.

That really is an awesome collection of pictures. I've never gotten ones that good with a live butterfly. It makes your big rig look well worth the extra size and weight.

Well done Dal, those are excellent shots, pity there's no butterfly house near my location that I know of at least , else I'd be tempted to try my hand. I have a similar homebrew setup of my own, and I agree a ballhead makes things much more flexible. No doubt about it, off camera flash and macro go hand in hand. ... Roy has been advocating that for a long while. ... Jack.
