I'm going to add one more reflection picture. It isn't the greatest, but that's not surprising since I took the picture out of the window of a car moving at over 70 mph. I haven't been able to figure out how to get this picture any place else besides traveling at high speeds on I-15. This is the "town" of Primm, Nevada. The reflection you can see isn't from water - the dry lake was bone dry on Saturday. This is a true mirage.

Harriet, thanks for that mirage photo. I was thinking of submitting one like it, but there are no mirages to photograph around here during this time of the year. Now I do have a qustion. Is a mirage formed only by having a wide flat surface acting as a mirror, or does there need to be heat as well? Perhaps we have a physicist aboard who could help us out on that one? By the way, that looks like a pretty serious roller coaster there!

I don't think it needs much heat - it wasn't very warm Saturday (like in the 40's, I think). I don't really know what causes mirages, whether it has to be something in the composition of the sand or what. It does partly have to do with angles, and perhaps distance - the closer you get to Primm, the less reflection there is, until you don't have any at all.
The roller coaster is connected to one of the casinos (Primm is right on the California-Nevada border). At the time it was built it held some record (not sure which one - I think it was the highest drop but I could be wrong). It really is some roller coaster! |
