Here is an example of ghosting caused by a Tiffen UV filter attached to a kit lens.
Notice the "green ghost" of the reading light "projected on the sheets. The same shot without the filter had no trace of this ghost and was of generally better contrast. (sorry, I deleted the "clean" shot without thinking, but if you are curious enough it is easy to duplicate). Ira |

Usually will happen when you shoot a very bright light or reflection...I get those at night with a kit lens and no filter on it! It's not just a filter then that will do it...Here is one with a Pentax 50mm 1:1.7 kit lens and it has no filter in front of it..
Here is one with sunlight! ![]() Moonlight. ![]() And moonlight again. ![]() Ghosting is caused by the bright light hitting the lens at an angle thus the lens works like a prism causing the varicolored "ghost". The filters are not the cause but an uncoated filter will make it happen more frequently and worse than an uncovered lens but it isn't the cause of the ghosting. When I have a filter on and I get ghosting I remove the filter then see if the ghosting goes away...If not I put the filter on and move to a different angle to the light source! Coated lenses will help the ghosting be less frequent and allow a sharper angle to a bright light but they won't totally eliminate it. Just cause less of it and at sharper angles to a bright light source! My Two Cents!! Dawg |
