Some nice duck shots. I saw one of those tufted varieties on a state park lake a couple of weeks ago and was told that it was a domestic duck that had chosen to leave domesticity and hang out with the mallards that inhabited a wave break that shielded a marina. Looks like that one is a cross.
Is the grey headed duck with the mallard in #2 a domestic variety? |

Domestic ducks are derived either from Mallards or Muscovys. Mallards are so mixed with domestic varieties (the white Pekins, etc) that it seems there are hardly any pure wild types left. 5 and perhaps 4 are the only wild types here - the others are what I derisively call "Mostly Mallards". They will sometimes even hybridize with other ducks, too - not at all discriminating! I wouldn't even try to guess what is in #6.
The ones in the last photo in part I are Muscovy types. |
