I've always had good luck with Thomas Distributing, but I also note that there's nothing is their description that ascertains that those batteries are fit for low temperature use. It could also be that you drew a bad set. I'd call Thomas and talk to one of their tech people; see if they can find the temp. ratings and range for those batteries.

Well sounds to me like you already found the fix. Don't use the RCR-V3 batteries as the Pentax manual states not to as they are not compatible with the camera. If it works fine with NiMH AA's then that is what I would use.
