After returning from a shoot today, I noticed that my DL is missing the rubber eyepiece surround. I looked all over, and can't locate it. Does anyone know where I can purchase replacement surrounds?

mtclimber Aug 5, 2006 6:25 PM

illuminati-

I would think that you can order one from the Pentax website in your country. Just give them a call to identify the part number and they can probably take the order right in the same phone call.

You can order the parts. No problem. I nearly lost mine. After that I just fixed it by putting two drops of crazy glue at its base.

The part is called eyecup Fn and usually Henry or Mertle can order it from Pentax Canada,
Alternatively, costwise this (see the link) is not that much over that of a Pentax.

I was exploring that as I do need the magnification.\
B&H site is currently down. Otherwise I will be able to get you the price of an alternative ( Nikon DK-21M eyepiece).
Good luck.

Hi illuminati.

If you're interested in something different, I've replace the standard eyecup with one from on old Canon AE1. I've found that I like to sometimes eliminate all the extraneous light around the viewfinder, and the old "cup" design does just that. It fits a little tightly, but that just holds it in place a bit better, and if you make sure that the rubber goes into the slot surrounding the viewfinder completely, it's pretty secure. If you google "canon ae1 eyecup" , you can probably find a source for @ $5 US on ebay. I got mine at my local camera shop in one of those misc stuff drawers.

I don't usually carry my camera in a bag, so it hasn't fallen off yet, but it does protrude, so it probably would if you're constantly dragging it out of a bag -- but as I said, it's something different.

Here's a few quick snaps to give you an idea how it looks:

If you try to find one, just make sure it has a rectangular base and is all rubber.

Oh yeah, this is shown on a DS, if that makes a difference.

daniel,

thanks, i'll have to email henry's again and try to get a response (maybe i should phone). what or who is mertle ? tried google and first few pages at least no info that looked likely. maybe local toronto store?

don't want any magnification so that one won't do.

pretty sure i checked b&h (and a few others) and they had eyecups but not the fn.

eric

Sorry about my typo. It should be

Eyecup or Fn. Are they the same in function if not in shape?
Did you get your DL from a local camera store or through mail order from the US?

daniel, thanks again, looks like merkle doesn't have it. i'll try phoning pentax or henry's, maybe the direct method will get results.

i got the camera (dl) from adorama in new york. they list an eyecup but not the model i need (fn) and it's out of stock anyhow.

appreciate the help. eric

bper Aug 7, 2006 7:11 PM

Pentax list an eyecup FL on there website that fits the ist DS, DS2, but they show a price of $30.00. That sounds high to me for a piece of rubber. Not sure whether it is the samefor the DL. My DL manual list and Fn, but maybe someone that has a DS can check there book and see what number they show. But maybe you can find one for less - Bruce

I still have my eyecup, but I use this solution that keeps the LCD clean and makes it very easy to see in bright light.

Tom, I'd like some more details on the retractable shade contraption in your picture. Does it snap on, or is it affixed via some adhesive? Where can such a device be purchased? Jay

ennacac Aug 7, 2006 8:07 PM

I slides on just like the original, fits fairly tight and I have never had any issues with it coming loose.

I got mine here:

i know a couple of people that use , i think, an orion telescope lens eyepiece it just stretches over the pentax mount. it provides a 100% coverage of your eye. i've been meaning to get one but when i'm in that part of town i always forget.. think they are under 10usd..

ennacac Aug 7, 2006 11:10 PM

There are lots of options out there, I just like the Delkin because it keeps the LCD clean when I am shooting and allows me to see the LCD in the brightest light when I want to review my images.

It also makes my camera look less like an expensive DSLR and more like a hard to sell film camera.

Tom

danielchtong Aug 8, 2006 8:11 AM

Price and function wise, Tom's alternative is the best. This is on top of the fact that Pentax Canada is to give you the run around.

If anybody is interested here's a link to a Delkin cover that fits the DL. It's more exspensive than the model for the DS.

Hey Rufus, I was just checking my ebay messages... I sent the seller a question about the one for the dl & the one that you have the link to above is for the "Pro" style with the cover for the buttons on the left also. The regular style, like the one Tom has for his ds, is the same amount. $23.99 + 3.99 shipping usd. BTW, the "Pro" is 38.99 w/ free ship in the US

here's the regular http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...%3AIT&rd=1

here's the Pro http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...0%3D%26fvi%3D1

Just thought I would let us dl users know...I'm thinking that it's moving up on my wish list. I, too, have lost my eye cup & am wondering how much longer I can keep from scratching the screen, since I haven't started putting any protectant on it yet.

Thanks for the tip, Tom!!!

Ron

ennacac Aug 8, 2006 9:35 PM

The pro version covers the buttons on the rear of the lens and you can see from my photos that the regular version does not. I didn't feel the need for the extra coverage and the double buttons of the pro version, which is why I got the regular one along with price.

Rufus T Firefly Aug 9, 2006 7:08 AM

Wadue, thank you for that info. :cool:I was going by what I saw on Delkin's site and only found the pro model. This is now moving up on my wish list also. I wish my work didn't block ebay so I could check out your link. It's like they want me to work or something. :-)Thanks again!

milrodpxpx Aug 9, 2006 7:56 AM

if you go to the delkin website and use their search feature to 'find the right cover for your camera' you'll find a screen-only cover for the DL for $24.99 on their website.

danielchtong Aug 9, 2006 9:57 PM

Hey just because you have a loose eyepiece, there are so many response and alternative suggestions some of which were really unexpected.
Well you have quite a few choice.

Daniel

The links shown on this thread as well as what is listed at Delkin's website refers to this item for the DS. Does anyone know if it will fit the DL in he same way that it does the DS? Jay

They have a couple of different models that fit the DL. At the bottom of this page they list the pro version for the DL. Then they also have a universal version that covers the LCD only. You can find that one by using their search feature (thanks to milrodpxpx for pointing that out).

louparker Oct 17, 2007 3:25 PM

Scott, your message is old and the photo of the Canon eyecup on a Pentax DS is no longer available on Flickr. Can you email it to me at [email protected] so I can see how it looks because I need to replace my lost eyecup on my Pentax ist DL. Thanks, Lou

DMJJR Oct 17, 2007 7:46 PM

About 10 days ago I bought a eyepiece loupe manifier from B&H-it is a 1.2x. The insructions states it fits all Pentax Dslr's. Very easyto install-price was $34.95 + UPS. Not cheap but it really works with my eyes-makes everything really clear.

Model O-ME53 by Pentax-just search on B&H

nhmom Oct 17, 2007 8:18 PM

Thanks, DMJJR. I've had this item in my wish list on b&h for months, but wasn't sure it would do what I needed. Sounds like it will. Maybe I can see better what I'm capturing before I push the button now.:-)

I'm going off to order it (and a few other things) now.
