Rio

We took a Red Eye flight from Miami to Rio and by the time we got checked into the hotel and caught up with friends from Michigan who we travel with, we decided to just sit around the hotel and catch up with each other as we have not seen them for a year.

The scenery from the hotels outdoor pool was quite nice.

Also some scenery not so nice. This is a Favela or shanty town located right behind our hotel. We were told not to go for a walk outside the hotel grounds. I have to tell you that the views from this shanty town were million dollar views.

There was a convention at the hotel for the largest snack food company in S. America. They had a nice band that played Brazilian music that we could hear from our lounge chairs.

There were also some native birds that stayed long enough to have a picture taken.

Then another exotic bird landed. I think that the female was in breading plumage. I got a good shot as she came toward me.

Our second day in Rio was nonstop touring (well one short stop for lunch).

This shot was taken at breakfast and shot through a rather dirty window in the dining room, while having our breakfast.

First stop was at the statue of Christ the Redeemer (130 tall) at the top of the 2300 Corcovado Mt... The tram car you see was like the one we took to get almost to the top of the hill. An 11 story elevator took you the rest of the way or you could climb 215 steps.

Our first glimpse at our cruise ship "Star Princess".

After lunch we visited Sugar loaf Mt. You take two cable cars to get to the top the first is 700 and the second is 1300.
The views are spectacular.

Hans, I was too slow posting and hope you get to see the rest. I also hope that one day you will get to see this fabulous city.

Wow, Lou, these are amazing. The scenery looks stunning. The contrast between the affluent areas and the shantytowns is striking, and troubling. The "native birds" are wonderful.

OK - now I need a 'dirty window' filter .. gorgeous shot ! Lovely series - liked the Favela shots very much too.

I don't understand though, if the exotic bird was in breeding plumage, how you didn't take advantage of that ;)

Kevin, by putting my camera lens against the window and using a large aperture the dirt became less visible.

As for the exotic bird. I think this was the rare and endangered "Large Breasted Bed Thrasher (Penolta will have to confirm the species ID). The male of the species said that if I made a wrong move he would kill me and have me for dinner. Besides I was looking for "The Girl from Ipanema".

She did shake her tail feathers at me as she flew away.

Thanks Mtnman. Just this week the Brazil government raided several of the larger Favela and cleaned out the drug element. They need to do this before the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016.

More on the native bird in my reply to Kevin.
