Not the best shot but, I barely got a chance to focus and click before he walked over the bank an out of sight. Not sure what I got here, anyone have an id?

Hi GW,
Looks like an adult Black-Crowned Night Heron. one of my favorites, along with the other herons that make their way around where I live. Now that you know that at least one hangs out at this area, you might try looking in either shallow water areas , or places where there is either a lot of floating wood or very low overhanging branches, and get some shots of them fishing. You have to stalk them carefully, as they are very conscious of movement around them. Scott |

We are only an hour apart and I don't know that I have ever seen that type of bird before. I defer to Scott's ID and I will start watching for them. You sure got the focus right for a "from the hip" shot.

One of the reasons I like pictures like this is because they are so hard to get! It might not be "perfect" but the focus is right-on and it's a nice picture of a bird in its natural environment. I'll defer to Scott for the ID - I'm not much of a birder.

Wow Scott, if your right, I'm very surprised! This is the first time I have seen one around here. I'll be keeping my eye out for more! ![]() |
