One of things on my list of 10 things to do before I die is to get published in National Geographic. On May 26th one of my images was chosen for the "Daily-Dozen" in the "Your Shot" monthly contest. I have been trying for about two years to get an image in so this came as quite a pleasant surprise.

To see the image at NG do the following:
Go here http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/your-shot/daily-dozen

Click on the Daily-Dozen anywhere.
In the week - select May - week 5.
Click the >| button on the right hand side 6 times to get to the last 6 images.
Select the third image from the left - that is mine.
Bubble Gum Wall outside the Market Theater at Pike Place Market - Seattle, WA

I sent a message to the primary instructor from the NG Expedition photo workshop I attended in 2005 and he said (paraphrasing) "Since NG is moving more and more to the web, this does count as being published by NG." It took me a little time to get my old paper based brain around this, but it is true - I am published in NG.

One down - nine to go ----- or nine more gotta do's to come up with.

Here is a link to my NG gallery - yes you can post images to NG now.

I encourage everyone to join in on the fun - some of the images are very good. (As an aside - when I vote, if the person enters the type of camera they have - I deduct a point or two -- because it is all about the image - not the camera).

But since this is a camera brand oriented site:
K10D, ISO 100, f6.3, 1/6th second, 33mm, Kit lens (from my *ist Ds), matrix metering, SR on, cloudy, no flash, PP'd in Lightroom Beta 2.0.

Oh - voting is over, the image that did win was a long exposure of Yosemite Valleyat night - very nice but I voted it lower as referenced above.

A definite feather in you cap! . . . and a neat photo!

Well deserved.

Looks like we have another venue other than PPG to submit our photos to be ultimately rejected:?:?:-)

Congratulations, Philip. It is well deserved.

That's quite an interesting photo. Do they ever clean the wall? Or, is it years worth of gum.

Way to go PDL. That's quite an accomplishment!

I've posted a couple of pics but no joy. They do select some interesting photos.

Thank you all for the comments.

To answer a few things:

Yes, the city cleans the wall off periodically, but they have not really tried for a while. They would clean it off and people would just start over, now I think they clean the wall off every few years once the stuff gets thick enough to start falling off in chunks. The Market celebrated its 100th Anniversary last year - so I know they did not clean while the celebration was occurring.

I have been putting images up on Your-Shot since they started off and on, this is the first one that has gathered any traction. I put it up on the 21st and it was accepted on the 26th - so just like other sites, it takes a while. This part of the NG site won the webby with PPG coming in as the peoples choice.

I have quite a few images of the wall even though it took me nearly two years to find. (Being a male I did not ask directions) It is in a North/South alley so unless you get there between 11:00 and 1:00 you will not get direct light. I have some in the sunshine, but the contrast is pretty hard to manage. The entrance and ticket booth of the Theater is tucked back into the wall, so the booth is always in shadow - more images are necessary I think.

If you ever get out to Seattle - please go to "The Market", you will not be disappointed, the crafts/art are pretty cool and the food (it is a market after all) is top notch from the fish mongers, vegetable/fruit booths and restaurant's. Come to the NW and bring your camera - it is a place where there are many targets of opportunity.

Wonderful shot - I finally got enough time to go visit it. I'm glad I took some extra time since I've never been to their website. The photos that they chose are really awesome, and they fit into the whole idea of NG, rather than photography in general. I love your picture, and it sure is in some really incredible company!

Quite an honor, though a somewhat disgusting subject :-) Thanks for the link, I had not known NG had user submitted photographs. I really enjoyed that magazine as a kid, though I have not read it in years.
