You don't need a 28-80mm, you need a 50-200mm, a 70-300mm or an older 70-200/210mm zoom if you want to shoot bird shots. Much longer than 300mm is expensive and can be a handfull for a beginner (lots of shakey shots). I use a used 100-300mm FA f4.7-5.8 lens for bird photography, it is light, cheap (I paid less than $70) and gives nice results as long as there is lots of light.

Here are two examples, both at 300mm hand held on a bright day.

Wow- awesome shots- yes, i have come to understand i have alot to learn!LOL! I am just getting in class where they are discussing apeture and shutter speed- now I know why the slr is recommended- i had thought of getting a step below that with something like the Canon sureshots- but seeing the quality in the forum convinced me otherwise- well, for now another lens is not an option- maybe in a month or so- but even so, i am learning alot-

I have the DA 50-200 and used to have an F 70-210. Both are lovely lenses, and do a good job for most things, but if you really want to do much bird pictures, you'll probably end up like me, wanting something longer. Since I already have the DA 50-200, I'm looking around for a sharp 300mm prime. Think that will complement what I already have very nicely.
