Rodney, i had the 70-300 APO on my nikon D50 and i liked the lens a lot. I kept it on most of the time.

The APO is heavier than some lenses of this size.

The problem with birds is that they are still small, even at 300mm, so you end up cropping.

Reviews put the new much cheaper (and lighter)Tamron 70-300 as being close to the APO in results. So if you can get one, you may like body + kit lens + 70-300 Tamron as this sounds like it might come within the budget.
