I'm ordering the K10D with the standard kit lens and want to get a second zoom lens to fill in from the 55mm kit lensup to 300mm range for taking photos of farm sceens. I want a good lens but am going to have to stay in the $350 range. Probably will buy Tamron or Sigma. Could anyone give me some thoughts? Please include the mfg. part number if possible as I am new to the dlsr world and want to make sure I'm looking at exactly the right thing! Thanks!!

get the latest tamron or sigma 70-300. get the one that costs the most from either and you will still have enough left over for a 1.4x tele converter.

Between the kit lens and 200mm, the best budget option is the Pentax DA 50-200, which has been widely praised all over the Net. I have both the 50-200 and the Sigma 18-125, and the 50-200 is noticeably sharper.

The problem is over 200. It's asking a lot of a single lens under $350 to cover the entire range between 50 and 300. There are some nice 80-300s and 75-300s, but there will be a gap between the wide end of these lenses and the long end of the kit lens. General consensus is that the 28-300s are terribly soft at the long end. I have a feeling that any 50-300 you find under $350 is going to be pretty close to a 28-300 in terms of image quality at the long end.

You could try the 50-200 with a teleconverter; that combo can probably be had for under $350. But the 50-200 is a slow lens (its only real weak point) and image quality with a teleconverter may not be ideal, especially if the TC is more than 1.4x.

If you go over $350 there is the Sigma 50-500 (the "Bigma"). But it's $900 and a real load to carry. Other can speak to its image quality.

A final option is the new Tamron 18-250, due out late this year. The 18-200s are soft at the long end, and there's no immediate reason to think the 18-250 will be better. And they're charging $500 for it.

So, your choices are, get a 75- or 80-300 and live with the gap; get the 50-200 and either buy the TC or live with the lack of range; get a 28-300 and cover the entire range with reduced image quality; or spend more than $350. No easy answer to be found, I'm afraid.:sad:

I have been very impressed with the sigma 70-300mm apo dg. I got it used off ebay for $145. New, it is selling for $200. Great lens. It has 1:2 macro ability. It is also light enough to hike around and take handheld shots.

Here are some sample pics with the k100d body.

I could pick a nit or two with the Sigma 70-300, but that's really all it would be. I like mine. A lot. It's the latest model.

Thanks to all of you. Looks like the Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro for me. I am ordering the K10D with the kit lens and the Sigma in a day or two when I find the vendor I want to use. Thanks again!

No, the lens I'm talking about is the 70-300 APO DG Macro lens (Sigma# 508109).
