Hello,
I am buying a K100D in the next few days.
I am going to order the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG Macro and the supplier hopes it will arrive before Christmas. It's approximate price will be $Au400.

However in the meantime I am still trying to decide which basic kit I should get, all the kits here in Australia are Sigma. Very strangely the body only price is at best only $Au 20 less than the kit price and sometimes $Au 200 more.

So my basic choices are either the
K100D Body and Sigma AF 18-50mm DC Zoom Lens for $AU 899
or for a extra $100
the K100D Body and Sigma AF 18-125mm DC Zoom Lens at $Au 999

I know both of these lenses are of basic quality, but is the 125mm worth the extra $100 or should I save my money for better lenses later on and just get the 50mm.

Thankyou,
Rodney.

Hi Rodney,
I've heard bad things about the Sigma 18-50mm so I would steer clear of that deal
I have the Sigma 18-125mm, it's definitely a better lense than the 18-50 and I'm pretty happy with it. I'd say its worth the $100 extra.

Another option is the Samsung GX1s Twin Kit which includes the 18-50mm and 50-200mm Schnieder Xenon lenses which are just rebadged Pentax lenses.
It's a great deal for au$999 @ Teds Cameras.
Only problem is, it doesn't have shake reduction and is just a rebaged DL (I think..?)

You can't buy the K100D with the Pentax 18-55mm kit lens? That's strange. It's a shame too because the Pentax kit lens is actually quite good. Here in the U.S., the small price difference from the "body only" to the kit is well worth it to get that lens.

I have the Sigma 18-125 and like it.

If you can swing the Pentax 18-55 and the Pentax 50-200 together, that's probably a better choice than the 18-125 alone. I have the 50-200 and it's just noticeably sharper than the 18-125, especially over 100mm. But the 50-200 isn't wide enough to be your everyday lens.

The Sigma 17-70 is probably a better everyday lens than either the 18-55 or the 18-125, if it's within your price range.

That's correct. The company who imports Pentax to Australia also import Sigma, so to keep the price down the kit comes with the Sigma.

Here's another thought for you Rodney.
JB Hifi has the ist DL for $597 with the sigma 18-50.
That would leave you with $400 to get some nice glass.

There are no Pentax Lens kits here, only Sigma.
The only other kits available are the Pentax K100D Digital SLR Camera + 24-70 & 70-300mm Sigma Lenses for $Au 999.
and
K100D Digital SLR Camera + 18-50 & 55-200mm Sigma Lenses for $Au 1295.

So it's the 18-50
or 18-125
or 24-70 and 70-300
or 18-50 and 55-200

I luckily found a
Sigma 70-300mm APO DG Macro for $Au 349 which I pick up Friday.

So all I need to do is decide which kit?
I don't think I need two 300mm's, the 18-50 gets rubbished.
So it has to be the 18-125
I hope it will give good quality photos and suit the K100D.

Rodney.

Hi,

This would be best made by you. You know what type of pictures you will be taking. If it was me and the those were the only choices, I would go for the 18-125mm. But seeing that this dealer is also a Sigma dealer Look into the 28-70mm f2.8-4. Here it can be bought between $60.00 -$80.00. I love the lens on my Canon. But since I have sold all of my Canon gear and gone to Pentax I bought a Pentax 28-70 f4.

Like I said this is a presonal choice, Kind of like buying Underwear.... :G

Hi,

Here is one place to look for lenses. I don't know if they ship to AU. Here is the listing for the 28-70 2.8-4: http://www.sigma4less.com/sess/utn;j...870F284PX%3D29

I had this lens on my Canon 300D. When I switched to Pentax I got a Pentax 28-70mm f4. I bought my pentax and lenses from KEH : http://www.keh.com/onlinestore/home.aspx

They do ship world wide. Look at KEH. Their rating system is excellent. Their bargin lenses are what I would call excellent.
